- In the Summer of 2006, I saw Al Gore's film, "An Inconvenient Truth" and felt the urgency and the responsibility to do what I could in my community to make the environment cleaner and heathier for me and my family. I posted no idling signage around my neighborhood and soon surrounding communities participated. Now, we have distributed nearly 100 signs to schools, park districts and businesses and have raised awareness about the need to turn car engines off while idling. Once you turn your engine off, you have taken the 1st step toward being socially responsible and environmentally conscious - Congratulations in your efforts and turn your engine off!
MYTHS ABOUT IDLING
- #1 THE ENGINE SHOULD BE WARMED UP BEFORE DRIVING
- THE BEST WAY TO WARM THE ENGINE IS TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE
- #2 IDLING IS GOOD FOR YOUR ENGINE
- EXCESSIVE IDLING CAN ACTUALLY DAMAGE YOUR ENGINE COMPONENTS
- #3 SHUTTING OFF AND RESTARING YOUR VEHICLE IS HARD ON THE ENGINE & USES MORE GAS THAN IF YOU LEAVE YOUR CAR RUNNING
- FREQUENT RESTARTING HAS LITTLE IMPACT ON ENGINE COMPONENTS LIKE THE BATTERY AND THE STARTER MOTOR.

Start an anti-idling program in your city or town.
THE COST OF IDLING
- An hour of automobile idling burns approximately 1/5 of a gallon of gas and releases nearly 4 lbs. of CO2 into the air
- An idling vehicle gets the worst gas mileage possible - 0 MPG
- Decreased peak engine operating temperture due to spark plug residue
- Corrosion caused by excessive condensation collected in the exhaust system
- Oil Contamination due to reside build-up on the cylinders
